Pittsburg Vol. Fire Department was formed in 1975 when the community saw a need to improve the fire service. The department has come a long way in 30 years. We currently have two stations. Station I is at the intersection of J Hwy and County Road 245 (J-8), Station II is on NN Hwy beside the Nemo Bowling Alley.
We have seven trucks in-service, they include:
Engine 1: 1984 Ford F-750 with a 1,000gpm pump and 1,000 gal tank
Engine 2: 1994 Chevy with a 1,000 gpm pump and 1,000 gal tank
Pump 2: 1965 Ford F-850 with a 500 gpm pump and 1,250 gal tank
Tanker 1: 1989 Chevy with a 1,800 gal tank
Tanker 2: 1967 Ford F-750 with a 1,544 gal tank
Tanker 4: 2008 Kenworth T-300 with a 2000 gal tank
Lake Truck: 1986 Chevy 1 ton flat bed with a 2,000 gpm pump
In 2005 we were awarded over $100,000 in grants for small equipment. Some of the equipment includes: a Thermal Imaging Camera, new SCBA’s (used to go into burning buildings), fire gear, portable deck gun, radios, RIT pack (used to rescue fire fighters and civilians in dangerous areas), and other equipment. This year we have applied for almost $300,000 in grants for a new fire truck ($187,000) and recruitment and retention ($99,000) so far, with more grants opening for application soon. The department works very hard, and applying for (and getting) these grants are a great way to give our fire fighters and our community what it needs.
